Liu Ying not having a good start to the New Year

Petaling Jaya , 27 Dec 2016

It has not been a good start to the New Year for mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying (pic).

First, she broke up with boyfriend Ong Jian Guo after a nine-year relationship. Now the 27-year-old is injured again and is racing against time to be fit for the second-tier Malaysian Masters in Sibu from Jan 17-22.

Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon, the Olympic silver medallists, are the top seeds in their first international tournament of the season. It's true that my relationship with Jian Guo is over but I don't want to talk about it.

My only concern is to recover from the injuries to compete in Sibu, said Liu Ying. "Both my knees are giving me problems again.

I need to take three stem-cell injections for each leg in the next two weeks and, hopefully, be ready for the tournament, she added. Liu Ying underwent two surgeries on both her knees in 2014.

But she made a successful comeback in 2015 by winning three Opens in Poland, Russia and Mexico with Peng Soon. Besides the Olympic silver in Rio de Janeiro in August, Liu Ying-Peng Soon also won the New Zealand Open last season.
